The Imperatore Library was pleased to host an afternoon of "cookies and conversation" with Gabriel Bol Deng, one of the Sudanese orphans known as The Lost Boys of Sudan. Deng spoke about the many obstacles that he has overcome in his life, including the raid that destroyed his village when he was a child and his subsequent struggle to find a home. He shared one of his guiding principles that 10% of every person's life is out of his or her control and unchangeable, but the other 90% is up to the individual and how he or she decides to shape it. Deng has decided to use his 90% to focus on outreach and education. Through his organization, HOPE for Ariang Foundation, Deng has been instrumental in rebuilding his home village in South Sudan, and in 2011 he helped found the Ariang School.
