The Power of Reading: New Research

Reading is a powerful thing. Your English teacher says so. Librarians trot out this kind of thing all the time, right?

Lately scientists, too, are weighing in on the benefits of reading, and the news is good. Consider the following:

  • A study at Emory University shows how reading fiction literally rewires the brain, causing “heightened connectivity” in the left temporal cortexes of college students. Check out The Huffington Post, The Huffington Post’s blog, or The Atlantic. The original research was published in the journal Brain Connectivity in December.
  • A study last fall from the New School for Social Research established a connection between reading literary fiction and developing empathy. Take a look at The Guardian’s “Books Blog” or USA Today for more details; check out the published research itself in Science magazine.
  • Author Neil Gaiman spoke eloquently last fall about “Why our future depends on libraries, reading and daydreaming.” See the full transcript at The Guardian.
